How to hire an SEO content writer to improve your rankings

Here is an interesting and informative post on Moz.com titled “How to screen and recruit the best SEO content writers“.

As someone who provides professional content writing services, SEO content writing and online copywriting, on daily basis I am dealing with clients who are looking for a writer for their website or for their blog.

I’m sure you may say that I’m targeting the wrong audience and hence I’m attracting wrong clients, but most of the clients first want to know how much my SEO content writing services are going to cost.

Hence, cost is a major worry for them.

Do they want quality?

They claim that they do, but I can understand by the way they talk they think that writers are available “a dime a dozen”, and I don’t blame them.

Nonetheless, when you are hiring a content writer seriously, and by seriously, I mean that you know that you will have to pay money to a good SEO content writer, the suggestions listed in the above link are good.

I am rehashing some of them below.

Why do you need an SEO content writer?

SEO-friendly content writing

SEO-friendly content writing

Personally, I believe you need a good content writer or a good writer who understands your topic and understands what your readers are looking for.

If your writer can take care of these two aspects, he or she is a good SEO content writer.

Anyway, you need an experienced writer to improve your search engine rankings because ranking these days is not as easy as it used to be.

There are many reasons.

Millions of pieces of content are being added to the web on daily basis.

In the beginning of the Internet there weren’t many people vying for the top positions.

To add to the difficulty, Google is also constantly improving its ranking algorithm.

In the past decade, three major algorithm updates done by Google are Panda, RankBrain and “Fred”.

There was also a Penguin update which the article hasn’t mentioned.

A long time back I wrote a blog post on it for Content Marketing Institute, titled, “How to survive the Google Penguin update with effective content writing“.

Panda was a major reshuffle in the early parts of the previous decade and it annihilated the rankings of many websites.

RankBrain uses searchers’ intent to decide your rankings.

A related blog post: Do you know how Google actually ranks your content? ()

Fred weeds out content pieces that don’t add any value.

So, basically, Google is trying its best to keep your content away from top rankings if your content is not of good quality and doesn’t provide any value.

This is why you need an SEO content writer.

An SEO content writer can take care of three things simultaneously:

  1. Write high-quality content.
  2. Write content according to your keywords and key phrases.
  3. Write content that is relevant to your readers.

What to look for in an SEO content writer when you are hiring one?

This is, what is explained in the above Moz.com link.

Here are a few things to consider when hiring an SEO content writer:

Knowledge of on-page SEO and writing optimized content

Although I have written above that it basically takes a good writer to help you improve your rankings, certain on-page SEO factors are important when writing content.

Can your SEO content writer

  • Write content based on your keywords and key phrases?
  • Come up with optimized titles knowing that your title plays a crucial role in deciding your rankings?
  • Utilise internal linking?
  • Write longform content of 2000+ words, if need be?
  • Write web friendly and mobile friendly content?
  • Show a good track record of ranking content for important keywords?

On my website you can find all this information even before having to contact me.

There is a great chance that you have come on this blog post through Google or another search engine.

You can also see plenty of interlinks on my blog and on my website.

All my blog post and web page titles are completely optimized.

Although I use important keywords to write my content, I don’t needlessly stuff them.

Knowledge of user experience and authoritative content

Your SEO content writer must know the importance of writing and publishing authoritative content.

Authoritative content is very crucial for your search engine rankings because it tells Google that your content can be trusted and valued.

Also, the SEO content writer that you hire must be able to write search friendly content.

It means, the content must be arranged under appropriate headings, subheadings, bullet points, and sentences and paragraphs.

Learn to value a good and experienced SEO content writer

Improving your SEO is a two-pronged process: just as an SEO content writer is supposed to understand your needs and the needs of your customers and clients, you must also understand the value of a good and experienced SEO content writer.

It’s true, you can find content writers a dime a dozen, but it is very difficult to find SEO content writers who can really deliver.

The fault lies on both the ends of the spectrum: content writers started offering their services dirt cheap and now most of the clients expect them to deliver their services dirt cheap, heavily compromising the quality in the process.

Hence, the first step towards hiring a capable SEO content writer is recognizing the fact that just like any other service, you will have to pay for high-quality content.

How to write SEO content for your business

The image shows a business desk and some search icons

SEO content writing for your business

Although SEO content writing is more of a way of identifying high-quality content rather than writing something specifically targeted at the search engines (which rarely works) it is a serious activity.

You want to attract traffic from search engines for your business and for that, you need to write content that delivers you the SEO results.

What is SEO content writing?

SEO-friendly content writing

SEO-friendly content writing

SEO writing focuses on your targeted keywords and phrases – use these keywords and phrases strategically throughout your webpage, article or blog post, enough times that the search engine algorithm thinks that these keywords and phrases are central to what you have published.

Since overuse of these keywords and phrases can be counter-productive (the ranking algorithm may think that you are trying to spam your way into better SEO), you also need to use alternative keywords and phrases.

You use these keywords and phrases in the title, headlines, in smaller headlines, in bulleted points, within the body text, and in hypertext.

There is no exact way of knowing how often you should repeat your targeted keywords and phrases, but the ideal ratio is 3-5%. They say that your keywords and phrases should appear every 150-200 words.

Usually, to improve your SEO through content writing, you prepare a list of phrases containing your targeted keywords and then you publish a series of webpages, articles, and blog posts handling individual phrase as part of a title.

For instance, if I want to generate traffic to my website for the search term “SEO content writing” or “SEO writer”, or “SEO content writer” I should write and publish lots of content having these terms in the title, but without repeating the same thing over and again. Every page must be unique.

As a trained and experienced SEO writer I help my clients come up with SEO writing that covers all their primary and secondary keywords without creating duplicate content. You do it regularly, and it is called SEO content writing.

I would like to stress again, writing for SEO doesn’t exist in isolation. Better SEO is a byproduct of high-quality content that is relevant, solves the purpose and delivers value to your visitors.

Writing SEO content for your business

Importance of content marketing in SEO

Importance of content marketing in SEO

It is very important to know at the outset what type of traffic you want to get from the search engines. You may think that the obvious answer is, traffic that grows your business, but things are not as simple as they may seem.

Remember that millions of pieces of content are being generated every minute on the web. On WordPress.com alone, 70 million posts are published each month (source).

The search engine algorithms have to make sense of this massive amount of information and then decide which piece of information should be ranked how, and based on which keywords and search terms.

So, you need to be very careful when preparing a list of keywords. You don’t want to generate traffic for every keyword suggested by the keyword tools you might be using.

Below I am listing a few things you can do to write the most appropriate SEO content for your business. As an experienced SEO content writer, I have been following this method to write SEO content for my clients.

Prepare a list of keywords and phrases in advance

keywords and SEO content writing

This gives you a direction and keeps you focused. Spend ample amount of time preparing a list of main keywords and secondary keywords and also associated keywords.

When choosing keywords make sure that they are relevant to your business.

Again, take for example this blog post. The main focus here is SEO content writing, SEO writing, SEO writer and SEO content writer. It is not SEO or search engine optimization. I don’t provide search engine optimization services. I provide writing services.

Hence, through this blog post, my intention is to explain how I can use my writing to get you better search engine rankings. Hence, writing and content writing are very important although I’m constantly talking about SEO.

Similarly, if you are a web design agency, then many of your titles must contain this phrase “web design agency” because people should be looking for a company that designs websites rather than a website portal that teaches people how to design websites. This may seem similar, but this small difference can make or break your business on the web.

Things to keep in mind when optimizing your content writing for your keywords:

  • Use your primary or main keywords and phrases for the page title and the main headline.
  • Use your primary or main keywords and phrases in the first 100-150 words.
  • Use variations of your keywords and phrases throughout the copy.

Focus on longtail keywords when writing content

Long tail SEO benefits explained

The importance of focusing on longtail keywords can never be stressed enough.

Keywords are normally two-word expressions whereas, longtail keywords usually contain 3-4 words for even more. They may carry a complete question, for example, “content writing service for my web design business”. This is very specific.

Longtail keywords are known to have less competition compared to shorter keywords and they are easier to optimize. They also have better conversion rate because they represent precisely the content people are looking for.

Know why you are writing a particular piece of content

As I have written above, it is not as simple as it seems.

Below I will be talking about writing content for different stages of your sales funnel.

Whenever you write a blog post or a webpage, have a clearly-defined purpose for it. For example, the purpose of this blog post is to give you valuable information on how to do SEO writing or how to instruct your SEO writer to help you improve your SEO through content writing.

In fact, your conversion depends on how well you understand the purpose of what you are publishing.

Every blog post and every webpage isn’t intended to generate direct business for you.

Sometimes you write to increase your subscribers. Sometimes you write and publish because you want people to download your e-book, case study or white paper.

Sometimes you just want to prove your expertise or creativity.

Write your content in the form of questions and answers for better SEO

When people are searching the web, they are mostly asking questions, especially nowadays when people speak into their devices rather than typing in their queries.

You may like to read How to optimize content writing for voice search.

Writing your content in the form of questions and answers has multiple benefits. It provides ready-made answers to search engines like Google. It satisfies “searchers intent” and consequently, gives further boost to your SEO. It improves your conversion rate because people find answers they are looking for.

To achieve this, you can prepare a comprehensive FAQs section. You can prepare individual blog posts dedicated to singular questions and their answers.

Focus on quality first and then on keywords and phrases when writing SEO content

What does quality content writing mean in terms of SEO?

What does quality content writing mean in terms of SEO?

No matter how lightly you may take search engines like Google, one thing you must admit, very highly intelligent minds are working at improving the search engine ranking algorithms 24×7.

Search engines like Google and Bing exist for their ability to find information people are looking for. This is very important “information people are looking for”, and not “information you think people should find”.

When you think in terms of “information you think people should find” you try to manipulate your content. You want to be found even when people don’t want to find you. This is a lose-lose situation for all the parties involved including you, the people who find you on search engine pages, and even the search engines. Nobody’s purpose is being solved.

Don’t trick people into visiting your website.

Many mistakenly conclude that once people are on their website, somehow, they will be convinced and then they will do business. This doesn’t happen. People immediately leave your website if they think they have landed on a wrong link. They won’t explore your website if they are disappointed in the first place.

Hence, focus on relevance. Focus on quality. Focus on meaningfulness. Focus on purposefulness. Then think of your keywords.

This is not very difficult. Choose your topics carefully, and then provide as much information as possible on those topics, preferably arranged under various headlines and bulleted points.

Target different stages of your sales funnel to increase your content and consequently, improve your SEO

Content writing for different stages of your sales funnel

Content writing for different stages of your sales funnel

You need to attract traffic for all the stages of your sales funnel. The broadest stage of your sales funnel consists of people who are simply researching and haven’t yet made up their minds whether they need your product or service or not.

For them you will write educational content. For example, on my website you will find lots of webpages and blog posts talking about the benefits of using quality writing. Through such webpages and blog posts, I target people who want to improve their conversion rate and their SEO but don’t know that content writing can achieve this for them.

I try to target questions like “How can I improve my conversion rate?” Or “How can I improve my search engine rankings?”, and so on.

Then there is a stage where people know that they need an experienced writer for their website, but they don’t know whom to hire. For such people, I regularly write and publish webpages and blog posts such as Why you should hire me as your content writer?

Keep your sales funnel in front of you when researching keywords for SEO writing or ask your SEO writer to do the same.

Use a mind mapping tool to organize your thoughts when writing SEO content

Although, this is less about writing and more about efficiency, you will be surprised to know how well you organize your thoughts using a mind mapping tool like XMind.

There are two benefits of using a mind mapping tool: You organize your thoughts in monosyllables, words and phrases, and the entire map of your webpage, article or blog post is in front of you. Everything that you need to cover, you can put in the mind map so that when you are writing, you don’t forget about covering something important.

A mind mapping tool like XMind also allows you to insert notes and hyperlinks so, under various sections, you can also put in research material.

Use Google Analytics to streamline your SEO content writing process

Google Analytics in combination with Google Search Console, can give you lots of information about what sort of traffic your content is attracting from Google.

Google Analytics may not tell you what keywords and phrases you should be covering to write your content as a writer, it certainly tells you which keywords and phrases are attracting search engine traffic. This tells you whether you are in the right direction or not or whether you need to change the focus of your content.

If certain topics are getting more traffic, and this is the right sort of traffic, you can create similar topics or add more information to those topics.

If certain pieces of content are attracting traffic for all the wrong reasons, you can make changes, or even take them down and rewrite them.

Follow an SEO-friendly format when writing content for your business website

It is often advised that when you are writing content for search engines, write in a manner that even if someone quickly browses through your webpage, he or she can make out what you are talking about.

Organize your content under various headings and subheadings and through these headings and subheadings, highlight what you are going to present in the following text.

If there are some step-by-step instructions, use bulleted points instead of simple paragraphs. It’s easier to read bulleted points.

You can also make important portions bold.

Basically, make it easier to make sense of what you have written even without reading each and every word. This is how crawlers go through your content. They go through the highlighted portions in most of the cases to save time.

Another thing, don’t use very big paragraphs. Preferably, use a single sentence as a single paragraph. This seems annoying to some, but it makes it easier for search engine crawlers to go through your content.

Write your content in such a manner that it is optimized for Google’s Featured Snippets

Example of Google featured snippet

Example of Google featured snippet

This is also more or less a formatting issue: express the main answer to the hypothetical question being raised by the title of your blog post in such a manner that Google can pick it up as a “Featured Snippet”.

According to Ahrefs, if your link shows up as featured snippet, it gets 31% more traffic compared to your top position without the featured snippet.

You may like to read Google’s Featured Snippets: How to rank at #1 with strategic content writing.

Write longer blog posts, preferably 2000-2500 words

The ideal word length should be 2100 words, according to this Hubspot study.

My very simple logic is, it is difficult to come up with 2000-2500 words on a topic. You need to have a lot to say. You need to have lots of information. To gather and compile and then write this information is an arduous undertaking. Hence, if you can achieve this, you have an edge over people who cannot achieve this.

A SerpIQ study concluded that among the top 10 results, links having position #1 on an average have a little over 2450 words. Even among the top 10 results, the #10 place has more than 2000 words. Here is the graph:

Longer blog posts get higher search engine rankings

Longer blog posts get higher search engine rankings

This may not be true for every industry but my personal experience shows that longer blog posts have an edge over shorter blog posts.

As a content writer who focuses more on the readers and less on search engines, I believe that your SEO should be a byproduct of your quality writing. Focus on delivering and your search engine rankings automatically improve.

10 tips on how to write SEO content for your website.

What is the greatest challenge businesses face, when looking for a content writer for SEO?

greatest-challenge-when-looking-for-an-SEO-content-writer

Accountability is the greatest challenge businesses all over the world face when looking for a content writer for SEO, or rather, a content writer for any other business writing need.

The problem is, very few business-decision-makers, especially those people who are controlling content marketing departments in various companies, are aware of quality content. When they are looking for a content writer, their primary concern is improving search engine rankings through the so-called “optimized content”.

So, when they see that a content writer can cleverly use keywords and key phrases within the content, they think that they should hire this particular writer.

This is not a clever decision.

Read Why hire Credible Content writing services.

If you are serious about content marketing and also about organically improving your search engine rankings, you should look for a writer who is more interested in writing quality content than simply improving your search engine rankings.

Without quality content search engine rankings don’t matter. No matter how great your SEO is, unless your content converts, the writing doesn’t matter.

Consequently, they go with ANY writer. When they go with ANY writer, more often than not, they end up with an unreliable SEO writer, and again, consequently, they end up blaming the entire expertise for their own decision.

I have personally seen that writers who don’t understand content writing are not reliable. They are providing their services simply because it’s easier to provide writing services on the Internet. For them, it is not a business. Their stakes are not high. Many are doing content writing when they are between jobs or when they have got nothing better to do.

It is always better to go with a content writer or content writing service that’s a business.

So, the biggest challenges that businesses face while trying to hire a content writer for SEO are:

  1. Not having a clear idea of what quality content is.
  2. Hiring wrong content writer due to the lack of a clear idea of what quality content is.

How can a trained SEO content writer improve your search engine rankings as well as conversion rate?

trained-SEO-content-writerAn SEO content writer should be aware of the following concepts while creating content for you:

  • How to do keyword research.
  • How to optimize your content for appropriate keywords and search terms.
  • How to organize your content for search engine optimization.
  • Possibly, how to help you promote your content.

Agreed, capabilities mentioned above require greater expertise than a normal content writer can provide you, but if you can get all these expertise from a single source, it will be good for your business as well as your SEO.

Why keyword research is important before content writing?

Thorough keyword research gives you a direction and keeps you focused. It also gives you a clear idea of for whom you will be writing your content.

Suppose you are selling study tables. Will people be just searching for “study tables”? No, they may search for terms like

study table for kids
buy study table online
small study table
study table home delivery
study table with chair
wooden study table
bedside study table
folding study table
study table with cartoon characters
animal shaped study table

… and so on.

If you want people using these search terms to come to your website (assuming you are selling study tables) then you will be optimizing web pages and blog posts using these search terms.

But then, getting people using these search terms to your web pages and blog posts will only benefit you if many among them buy study tables from you.

This is where high-quality content matters.

Whatever people are searching for, if they are not happy with your content, they will go back and look for another website.

Anyway, once you have a list of keywords, you know what content you need to generate. You know what questions you need to answer. You know what things to tell people.

This is why it’s very important to have as comprehensive as possible a list of keywords before you start preparing (or your content writer) SEO content.

A trained content writer understands your need to optimize your content for your keywords as well as have relevant, engaging content that turns visitors into customers and clients.

Normally, when people are looking for a content writer for SEO, somehow, they end up neglecting the conversion part. Remember that the conversion rate of your content is as important as its ability to draw targeted traffic from search engines.

SEO guidelines for content writers

SEO content writer guidelines

SEO content writer guidelines

You can find thousands of content writers on the Internet vying for your business and some of them are actually brilliant.

But your business website, or even your blog, doesn’t just need a content writer, it needs a content writer that can take care of your SEO needs.

What am I talking about?

The performance of your content writer can be gauged from the following two indicators:

  • How much search engine traffic your content attracts.
  • How much of that traffic actually converts.

Successful content writers know how to draw a balance between both the requirements.

What does an SEO content writer do?

What does an SEO content writer do

What does an SEO content writer do

An SEO content writer writes search engine friendly content but more than that, he writes content that helps your visitors.

What does Google want to do? Does it want to crawl, index and rank your content or does it want to provide the best possible information to its search engine users?

It’s a mix of both.

It wants to provide the best possible information for the search being done.

The information cannot be found unless Google crawls, indexes and ranks your content (or content from other websites and Internet sources).

An SEO content writer knows what Google wants, from the inside out.

He knows that the content quality and the content relevance triumphs everything else.

Then, when quality and relevance are taken care of, the SEO content writer focuses on the keyword optimization aspect of your content.

Does he need to be a better writer? Obviously. He should be a great writer. He should be a great copywriter. He should be able to write convincingly and engagingly.

Your SEO content writer must also know how to format and organize your content in such a manner that Google can easily make sense of it.

Can any writer achieve that? Not without experience.

There are millions of webpages and blog posts on the Internet.

And when there are millions of webpages and blog posts to compete with, only the subtle things, things that cannot be directly observed by the eye, can make a big difference.

Hence, an SEO content writer

  1. Develops a complete understanding of your topic/subject before beginning to write.
  2. Completely understands what your audience is looking for.
  3. Writes your content impeccably.
  4. Knows where to use your keywords and where not to use them.
  5. Knows how to organize your content under various sections so that it’s easier for search engines to make sense of it.
  6. Write simple yet professional sentences that are easier to interpret both for search engine algorithms as well as human readers.

Does an SEO content writer just write content to improve search engine rankings?

It depends on in what capacity your SEO content writer is working with you. An experienced SEO content writer like me can provide both consulting as well as writing.

What does consulting mean? It means advising you with the topics that you must cover to improve your search engine rankings.

The sort of topics that you choose to cover is as important as writing the content itself. To create content that genuinely improves your search engine rankings you must know what information people are looking for and then write content accordingly.

You should also be able to write and publish unique information. Preferably, information that is not existing anywhere else. The more unique your information is, the better are going to be your search engine rankings.

The conversion rate of your content is as important as your search engine rankings. In fact, if you enjoy higher search engine rankings but your conversion rate is low, your rankings are of no use.

Hence, an SEO content writer must also be a good copywriter because only then he is going to be able to convince your visitors into turning your paying customers and clients.

Does an SEO content writer really improve your search engine rankings?

Well, this is the intention of working with an SEO content writer – your search engine rankings must experience a significant improvement once optimized content begins to appear on your website/blog on an ongoing basis.

“On an ongoing basis” is the key here. Publishing SEO content on your website or blog is not a one-time affair. Just like you continuously need to host your website, you continuously need to publish content.

The reason is, all your competitors are continuously publishing SEO content. They all want to outdo each other. Every competitor who is ranked below you, wants to rank above you, and he or she is not going to rest unless that objective is achieved.

Hence, you need to outdo his or her effort and for that, you need to publish SEO content on an ongoing basis.

Hence, provided

  1. Your content writer is well-versed with writing SEO content.
  2. You publish content regularly at set intervals.
  3. You focus on publishing high-quality content that delivers value.

Your SEO content writer is definitely going to improve your search engine rankings.

Your SEO content writer must strike a balance between higher search engine rankings and conversion rate

Balance between SEO and conversion rate

Balance between SEO and conversion rate

Your website needs targeted traffic from all over the web in general, and search engines in particular.

After that, it isn’t just search engine traffic that does the job, you also need business, you need paying customers and clients.

When I say content writers, I mean people who totally understand the need of a business to convert traffic into customers and clients.

Add SEO abilities and you have the killer combination. So here are a few SEO guidelines for content writers that may help you as a content writer, and as also as a business owner looking for an SEO-proficient content writer.

  1. Write for the target audience
  2. Use the language your target audience uses on day-to-day basis as well as on search engines
  3. Avoid using more than two keywords for a webpage, an article or a blog post
  4. Stick to the main topic and try to remain as vertical as possible
  5. Be original; search engines like Google dislike duplicate content
  6. Use the primary keyword in the title
  7. Write for your audience first, make sure your content is convincing and would convert well, and only then think about SEO
  8. Use your primary as well as longtail keyword in the description
  9. Write in a conversational style
  10. Use appropriate images whenever possible because this can get you extra traffic from image searches as well as social networking websites like Pinterest
  11. Solve a problem, or provide a solution
  12. Use primary keywords and longtail keywords within headline tags (for instance, <h1>, <h2>, etc.)

While preparing content for these SEO guidelines for content writers I discovered that lots of points that I have mentioned above already exist, or rather, appear in regurgitated form on other websites. Since the language is almost similar it shows that most of these writers don’t actually understand what it takes to create SEO-friendly content that also converts well, and they have simply taken the content off other websites and blogs. Some have even copied the bulleted lists straightaway. Well, this is the first sign that shows that where you stand.

Why SEO guidelines for content writers

Every good, experienced content writer by default is also a good SEO content writer.

Amidst daily professional and personal grinds we forget these points so it is always better to keep revising them on a regular basis so that they get embedded into our subconscious. For instance, creating a title that contains the primary keyword should be done as a usability benefit even if you are not specifically writing for SEO. Similarly, highlighting important point with the help of the main keywords helps your readers quickly understand the gist of your webpage or the blog post.
