Is longform content always better compared to shorter pieces?

Is longform content always better than short form content

Is longform content always better than short form content

I have multiple times written about the benefits of longform content.

You may like to read The difference between long form and short form content

Longform content is very long blog posts and articles comprising of at least 2500 words, or more.

Medium-sized blog posts consist of webpages and blog posts having more than 1000 words and less than or equal to 2500 words.

Various SEO plug-ins will tell you that anything less than 1000 words isn’t good for SEO.

Is it really so?

This Content Marketing Institute blog post says that not every piece of content needs to be longform content.

The author of the above post rightly says that not every topic requires 2000 words.

Suppose, I want to explain to you what is longform content; do I really need 2000 words to explain what longform content means?

I can explain it in 200 words, or even less.

How do you decide how long your blog post or web page should be?

You can decide this by considering what sort of information will be useful to your readers.

If you write something like “15 tips on creating highly effective SEO content”, then, while explaining these 15 tips, you may go beyond 2000-3000 words. This is because you will be talking about 15 topics or 15 tips.

I have seen on many blogs that they unnecessarily go on throwing around statistics from scores of blog posts and articles just to inflate the number of words.

This can be exhausting for the readers. Even I find such articles off- putting, especially when I’m looking for some quick information to use.

Best thing to do is, create a roadmap for your blog post. If possible, use a mind mapping tool. Keep on adding points till you feel that they’re going to be useful to your readers. The moment you feel that a particular section is not going to be useful, remove it. It is not going to adversely affect your SEO.

Can you grow your business during the coronavirus pandemic?

How to grow your business during the coronavirus outbreak

How to grow your business during the coronavirus outbreak

I know, talking about growing your business during this crushing coronavirus outbreak may seem a bit inappropriate.

The reality is, we all need to make a living, at least those who can.

We are all looking into a long spell of economic downturn coupled with a humanitarian crisis that hasn’t been seen for at least a century.

Hence, all the more reason to keep at least some parts of the economy moving and maintaining the cash flow.

This Green Entrepreneur blog post lists 7 strategies that can help you grow a business, or rather, a new business during the coronavirus pandemic.

Every challenge brings a collection of opportunities with it, and so has the current coronavirus pandemic.

With most of the businesses coming to a halt, you have time to focus on content marketing and expand your presence on the Internet. It will help you reach out to the existing market, however much it exists, and it will also give you a headway when the world gets on its feet.

The above blog post lists the following things you can do to grow your business while you maintain social distancing and remain confined to your home.

Enhance your content marketing effort

You may like to read Is content writing and publishing same as content marketing?

The good thing about content marketing is that content can be produced and published digitally. You don’t have to invest in raw material. All the tools that you need to publish useful content are already there with you.

You want to publish videos? You can use your mobile phone.

You want to publish podcasts? Even these can be done using your mobile phone or a standard microphone attached to your computer or laptop.

Want to publish blog posts? You can write them yourself or you can hire a content writer or a blog writer.

Content marketing helps you in normal days and it also helps you in these testing times.

Businesses haven’t disappeared. They are just recuperating, or they are functioning in a different manner. You have to reach out to them and content marketing is the best way to do so.

Work at improving your SEO

In the regular hubbub of doing business content marketing and SEO often take a backseat. This is a good time to focus on improving your search engine rankings and increase your search visibility.

The benefits of SEO come from many factors. As mentioned above, your search visibility improves. You get more targeted traffic. Your conversion rate improves. You get more back links because a greater number of people can find your content. You get more content to share through your newsletter.

There are various tools available that can help you figure out what sort of content you should publish to improve your SEO.

Invest in social media marketing

Facebook has nearly 2.45 billion monthly active users. At the time of the Covid-19 crisis, more people are logging on to Facebook to keep up with their loved ones and even to interact with their colleagues.

You may like to read 5 ways to make your content social media friendly

The same goes with other social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter.

Millions of your customers might be there. If you have never advertised on social media and social networking platforms, perhaps, now is the right time.

Be regular with email marketing

You may also like to read Email marketing dos and don’ts during the Covid-19 pandemic

Email marketing needs to be a bit different during a pandemic. Ideally it should be different always, in the sense that instead of continuously pushing your products and services in front of people, you must add value to their inboxes.

Keep in touch with your subscribers. Send them good information about how they can keep themselves safe. If you feel that a bit of information can help them work better during their confinement, share it with them. The key is, provide value. They are going to remember you for that.

Aside from these actions, I would also suggest you spend more time on LinkedIn if you’re providing B2B services, like I do. Almost all my content writing and online copywriting clients come from the B2B segment.

Should content writing be a big part of your digital marketing budget?

Content is the pillar of your content marketing strategy

Content is the pillar of your content marketing strategy

If you feel I am constantly talking about content writing budget and how most of the clients are not very eager to pay deserving rates for writing quality content, it’s just that, lots of thoughts and content are coming my way on this topic that are acting as stimulus.

So, bear with me.

It’s just that, I was going through this blog post on how you should decide your social media marketing budget and I was wondering, very few people talk about having a budget for content writing, and maybe this is why, most of the clients want to save the maximum while getting content for their websites and blogs.

They want to pay for web design.

They want to pay for SEO.

They want to pay for hosting.

They even want to pay for Google ads (AdWords).

But they don’t want to pay for content that is going to improve their SEO.

Content is the pillar of your entire content marketing and social media marketing strategy, whether we are talking about written content here, or videos and infographics.

As far as content goes, videos, infographics and quality images still demand a good price, but when it comes to paying for content writing, most of the clients think, well, it is just writing.

You don’t even need special software.

You can use Google Docs.

You can even use Notepad, for that matter.

But, when you are paying a content writer or a copywriter, you are not paying for software, you are paying for his or her ability to put across your message convincingly.

If people are not convinced,  they are not going to buy from you.

It is as simple as that.

What are you going to market, when you have got nothing substantial to market?

Hence, when you are formulating your content marketing, Internet marketing and digital marketing budgets for the year, keep in mind that content writing is also going to be a big part of that budget.

Improve your SEO with content auditing

Improve your SEO with content auditing

Improve your SEO with content auditing

For the past week I have been auditing my existing webpages.

In a hurry to build every section of the website, we often, quickly, build webpages without giving much care to the SEO aspect of those webpages.

These pages may be complete in themselves vis-à-vis delivering your core business message and conveying to your visitors how you can serve them, but in terms of SEO, you haven’t taken care of all the aspects of your content.

I exported the entire list of my main Credible Content business website webpages into an Excel sheet and now I try to rewrite the content of at least two webpages everyday.

Then, with color coding, I mark them done.

Is it improving my SEO?

For more than 1-1/2 months, I was bedridden.

I could only take care of client assignments and I couldn’t publish new content on my blog.

The content writing field is very competitive because practically, everyone can provide content writing services because most of the clients are unmindful of what is quality content.

Anyway, that’s an altogether a different issue, but one tends to lose search engine rankings very fast if one doesn’t publish new content regularly.

Since I couldn’t publish new blog posts and webpages on my own website, I lost search engine rankings for many of my top ranking keywords.

Even when I resumed my regular routine, I couldn’t focus on publishing your blog posts.

But I started rewriting my existing webpages – making them current and adding more sections and images.

I’m also optimizing these webpages for long tail keywords.

At least I have regained the rankings that I had lost.

What is content auditing?

What is content auditing?

What is content auditing?

Is there a content audit definition?

Is there a content audit tool you can use?

Is there any content audit criteria?

What exactly does webpage content audit consist of?

If you have had a business website you must have lots of webpages and blog posts that you have been adding over the years.

Many of these webpages and blog posts have old, outdated information that is not relevant to the current context.

You may have also lost their rankings because fresh content on the same topics or even on the related topics, have been crawled and indexed by Google and other search engines.

As I have written above, my search engine rankings suffered even when I couldn’t add new content for a couple of months.

Google is constantly looking for fresh content.

Content auditing means going through your individual webpages and blog posts (they already exist I presume) and then updating them.

Content auditing may include:

  • Adding fresh information.
  • Restructuring the content to make it crawler friendly.
  • Writing more content.
  • Incorporating your primary, secondary and longtail keywords.
  • Refining meta titles and descriptions.
  • Adding more images.
  • Updating obsolete information.

Content auditing can be as comprehensive as you want.

It can be an occasional exercise and it can be an ongoing undertaking.

Auditing can be full-fledged it during which you observe the following attributes of your existing content:

  • The number of clicks the link attracts.
  • First published date.
  • Author name (in case you have multiple authors).
  • Call-to-action of the webpage (what was the purpose of the webpage when you created it).
  • Page bounce rate.
  • Image alt tags.
  • URL.

Content auditing may take a few days, a few weeks or even a few months, depending on how much content you have.

Why content auditing improves your SEO?

Why content auditing improves SEO?

Why content auditing improves SEO?

When I say content auditing, I don’t mean just randomly updating your existing webpages and blog posts.

Auditing means having a serious look at them from the point of not just adding useful information, but also from the point of improving their SEO.

When for the first time you were creating those webpages and blog posts, maybe you didn’t have a clear idea of how to search engine optimize them.

Maybe you were not even aware that you should write your content keeping keywords in mind.

Or maybe you were too obsessed with the keywords and you didn’t pay attention to the overall quality and purposefulness of your content.

Or maybe you didn’t have an experienced content writer working for you and as a result, you neither have good quality content nor have optimized content.

Whatever is the reason, you should have a fresh look at your existing content and see what improvements you can make so that it not just reads well, it also improves your SEO.

Content auditing improves your SEO in the following ways

  • You use a tool like Google Analytics to know how much traffic your individual webpages and blog posts generate and which are the best performing and worse performing links.
  • You add more content – Google prefers lengthy pieces of webpages and blog posts.
  • You interlink your blog posts and webpages so that high traffic links can send references to your other blog posts and webpages that don’t get much exposure.
  • You rewrite meta titles and descriptions in terms of improving SEO.
  • You make the content fresh and resubmit the links, which Google likes.
  • You add more relevant images to give your SEO further boost.
  • You can re-share your content through your social media and social networking profiles getting more exposure to your older blog posts and webpages.

What are the benefits of content auditing?

  • Pinpoint main problem areas and rectify them.
  • Identify content for content repurposing (you may like to read How to repurpose old content?)
  • Improve quality of your content.
  • Restructure your content for better readability.
  • Incorporate primary, secondary and longtail keywords strategically and in a logical manner without compromising on the overall quantity of your content.
  • Enhance content usability.
  • Improve credibility by linking to trusted sources.
  • Improve call-to-action.

How to do content auditing?

This is something you yourself will have to figure out, but I can explain how I am doing.

I use WordPress as my CMS.

I use a plug-in that generates an HTML page of all the links that I have posted so far.

Using this plug-in I generated a fresh list and then copy/pasted the list into an Excel worksheet.

There are other tools also that can help you generate a list of all the URLs under your website, including Screaming Frog and URL Profiler.

I also use SEOPressor for WordPress to analyse my text as I write it.

I select a link and copy/paste it in the browser and then go to the WordPress dashboard to edit the link.

SEOPressor immediately tells me whether I have previously optimized the content or not.

I also check (using anonymous browsing) how the link ranks for the selected keywords and search phrases.

If SEOPressor tells me that I didn’t optimize the content the first time, I start working on it until the SEOPressor plug-in okays it.

Once I feel satisfied, I republish and resubmit the link to Google.

In the Excel sheet in the adjacent column, I enter the date on which I audited the link and then I also color code the link to mark it as “audited”.

This is how I do it.

I am an experienced content writer and I can immediately know if a certain webpage or blog post is optimized or not.

You may not have that experience.

You can hire a content writer to audit your website and then update the content.

If you have too many pages and blog posts, don’t worry about the cost.

You can select the most important pages and blog posts and hire a content writer to work on them.

However you decide to audit your content to improve your SEO, sometimes deciding to audit your existing content is better than adding new content.

How to use guest blogging to grow your traffic

Using guest blogging to grow your traffic

Using guest blogging to grow your traffic

Although I haven’t used guest blogging to grow my traffic much, I know it has great potential. It’s just that, I’m obsessed with my own blog and with the limited amount of time that I have, I prefer to spend it writing content for my own blog.

Even when guest blogging can help me increase my website traffic in a meaningful manner, some psychological hurdle has been blocking me.

In this blog post I’m going to talk about how to use guest blogging to grow your traffic in the hope that, it may also inspire me to do the same.

There are multiple ways you can use guest blogging to increase your website traffic.

The inspiration to write this blog on how to use guest blogging to grow your traffic came from the email update I received from LinkedIn promoting one of their posts: The State of Guest Blogging: How to Guest Post and Grow Your Traffic.

What is guest blogging? Does it really increase your traffic?

Guest blogging explained

Guest blogging explained

Guest blogging means writing for someone else’s blog to get exposure from an entirely new audience.

Whether it can actually increase your traffic depends on the quality of your writing and also the quality of the blog or the website where you are guest blogging.

There was a time when guest blogging was used mainly to get inbound links – publishers who publish your guest blog, attribute it to you and along with the attribution, they also link to your blog or website.

Those days, most of the people who were seriously trying to drive traffic to their websites, resorted to guest blogging.

Then people started using the “nofollow” tag and many blogs and online magazines these days give you no benefit in terms of backlinks.

If you want to write for them, they say, write it for pure exposure, and nothing else.

There are still some websites and blogs that give you “follow” backlinks, but their count is decreasing fast.

What is the difference between “nofollow” and “follow”?

Every website or blog has a page rank. It’s some sort of a ranking power or a ranking fuel.

It’s kind of a currency.

All the external links published on that website or blog get a small portion of this currency based on how much currency the website or the blog has.

Naturally, if a website or a blog has lots of page rank currency, it can distribute this currency to multiple links, but at the cost of losing some of it.

Webmasters who want to drive traffic from search engines need “follow” backlinks from these currency-rich websites and blogs if they want to increase traffic from search engines by improving their SEO.

Actually, there is no thing as “follow” backlinks. By default, every backlink is a “follow” backlink.

Since lots of people were trying to improve their SEO and consequently, drive search engine traffic to their websites, Google came up with the option of “nofollow”.

A blogger or Webmaster can use this attribute with every href tag to save his or her page rank currency but at the same time be able to link to external websites and blogs.

Coming back to guest blogging and how it can drive traffic to your website or blog.

How it can help you increase traffic.

Guest blogging helps you in two ways: gets you exposure on other websites and blogs, and gets you free, quality content for your own blog.

If things go well, I will be publishing a blog post from a guest blogger today.

Of late, as an increasing number of people are able to find my blog on search engines, I have been getting lots of queries from people interested in writing for my blog in exchange of a link to their website or blog.

Obviously they want to increase traffic by getting a link from my blog which enjoys better search engine rankings.

I use a plug-in that attaches a “nofollow” tag to every external link that I publish on my blog or website, but the plug-in also has a provision to make exceptions.

Being an experienced content writer and blogger, I can make out whether a guest blog has been written purely for the purpose of getting a backlink or the writer has invested some good amount of time and intention into writing the blog post.

When I feel that the writer really deserves a “follow” backlink, I make an exception.

Anyway, this was just to explain to you what is guest blogging.

Whether you are guest blogging or you are publishing blog from guest bloggers, provided you maintain a level of quality, you can increase traffic, you can drive more traffic.

Using guest blogging to grow your traffic

Traffic growth with guest blogging

Traffic growth with guest blogging

As I have explained to you, guest blogging helps you in two ways:

  1. Gets you exposure and traffic from other blogs and websites where you publish your guest blog post.
  2. Gets you fresh and regular content for your own blog and in return, increases your search engine rankings, and in return, grows your traffic.

Hence, whether you guest post on other blogs or you allow other writers to guest post on your own blog, you can use guest blogging to grow your traffic.

How to approach online publishers and bloggers for guest blogging opportunities?

How to approach publishers for guest blogging opportunities

How to approach publishers for guest blogging opportunities

If you want to know how to use guest blogging to grow your traffic, one of the most important things to learn is, how to approach other online publishers and bloggers for guest blogging opportunities.

Guest blogging needs to be a full-fledged strategy.

It’s a sustained effort.

Before you move forward with your guest blogging strategy to grow your traffic, you must know why you want to guest blog (assuming for the time being that you are planning on writing for other blogs and websites).

First decide why you want to publish guest blog posts

This Ultimate Guide to Guest Blogging by Neil Patel gives you every information you are ever going to need to learn about how to use guest blogging to grow your traffic.

He says that there are three reasons why you may choose to guest blog:

  1. You want to position yourself as an authority in front of a new audience.
  2. You want to leverage a high traffic website or blog to get traffic.
  3. Generate backlinks to your website or blog.

Keeping these reasons in mind will help you come up with appropriate guest blogging ideas and also approach the most suitable publishers for your guest blogging campaign.

Make a list of industries you would like to use guest blogging to grow your traffic

Randomly picking websites and blogs for guest blogging opportunities is going to be labor intensive as well as ineffective.

There is no need to approach every blog or website looking for writers.

You want to focus on your niche.

Make a list of niches you would like to focus.

Your competitors won’t publish your guest blog posts for obvious reasons unless you offer them something really irresistible – some sort of insight that you haven’t published on your own website.

If you are an app developer you would like to find websites and blogs on app development and ancillary technologies.

If you are a fashion designer, you may look for websites and blogs on lifestyle, celebrities and clothing.

If you are a content marketer, you may like to approach websites and blogs offering content marketing tips and tutorials.

The basic idea is, make a list of websites and blogs who would publish your guest blogs, and who will be directly or indirectly related to your industry or subject matter.

Finding the right publishers for guest blogging opportunities

This is very important. It’s given that whichever blogger or website owner you approach accepts guest blogging.

To begin your search, you can search for terms like

  • “looking for guest bloggers”
  • “submit guest post”
  • “we accept guest bloggers”
  • “guest post by”
  • “guest post guidelines”
  • “write for us”

You can combine these search terms with your industry, something like “content marketing write for us”.

You can use different search engines to prepare a nice list.

I would use Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo.

You can prepare an Excel sheet of all the links you have discovered.

Create different columns for the URL, industry, contacted/not contacted and response.

Prepare a message to offer your guest blog

When I receive offers from other guest bloggers, 90% of the offers I ignore.

This is because I know they have simply sent out a generic message to multiple publishers without having a look at my website.

Those messages that don’t have my name are immediately consigned to the trash folder.

Finding guest blogging opportunities to grow your traffic isn’t something that you want to do in a hurry.

If you don’t have much time, just study 1-2 links everyday.

Try to find everything about the blog including the owner of the blog, the person in charge of publishing and most importantly, what type of content is published.

Carefully study the blog

Carefully study the blog

Go through different guest blog posts on the blog and see what topics guest bloggers cover when writing for that blog.

Pay close attention to the quality of the content.

If the blog is indiscriminately publishing guest blog posts, stay away from such a blog.

You don’t want to publish your guest blog on a blog that easily accepts blog posts from other bloggers.

Once you have gathered enough information that will help you write a personal message to the person concerned, you can write something like this:

Hello {name}.

Having great interest in {mention the field} I have been closely following your blog for some time now.

Your blog post on {mention the blog post} was especially insightful, especially the part where you say {mention the part}.

Of late I have been searching for guest blogging opportunities and your blog immediately came to my mind.

One of the greatest reasons why I would like to write for your blog is that I have noticed you’re a stickler for quality.

So, when I send you my submission, I know that you will publish it only if it is worth publishing.

I look at it as a positive challenge.

Here is the topic I think  that can add some value to your blog {mention topic}.

If you’re interested, let me know and I will send you a draft.

Not interested?

No need to worry. I won’t take it personally.

Looking forward to hearing from you, and well done for all that great content!

Cheers!

{your name}

You don’t have to use the exact words, but if you use the underlying philosophy your message will be better received.

How to use guest blogging to grow your traffic even when you don’t want to ask other bloggers?

Sometimes you’re not comfortable with approaching other bloggers.

I can understand.

It doesn’t mean you cannot use guest blogging to grow your traffic.

There are many high traffic websites where you can create a presence for yourself and in return, use the platform for guest blogging.

You can use the LinkedIn publishing platform, for example.

The professional social networking platform allows you to publish blog posts.

When you publish a blog post on LinkedIn, all your contacts are immediately notified.

If LinkedIn features your blog post in one of its newsletters or in the “featured posts” section, it can generate massive amount of traffic for your blog or get you great visibility.

You can use Medium.

It is a great blogging platform with its own audience.

Both LinkedIn and Medium enjoy good search engine rankings and when you publish your content on these publishing platforms, it will be quickly crawled and indexed by all major search engines, helping you grow your traffic in the process.

Similarly, there are many niche platforms, HackerNoon, for example, where you can publish your guest blog posts to grow your traffic if you don’t want to approach independent bloggers.

If you want to use guest blogging to grow your traffic please remember that it is not a quick fix approach.

Just like any other content marketing method, it is going to take strategy, patience and lots of hard work.

There is no benefit in publishing your guest blog posts on websites that accept inferior quality content.

But, websites that accept quality content will not easily publish your post.

Hence, it takes time, patience and hard work.

It is an ongoing process.

Always be on the look.

Increase your expertise.

Improve your writing style (or work with an experienced content writer).

Expand your network using social media.

You can definitely use guest blogging to grow your traffic, provided you know what you want to communicate and which blog audience is the best for you.

Here is a nice list of 100 places where you can submit your guest blog posts.
