For example, if I want search engine traffic for the query “organic SEO content writing services” I will need to bid on this keyword in my AdWords account and my ad will be shown according to how much, per click, I’m paying.

This can be quite expensive. More expensive if the competition for the keyword is high.

For example, if I pay $1.75 per click for the query “organic SEO content writing services”, for 100 clicks, I will be paying Google $175.

The best solution for me would be improving my search engine rankings for the above-mentioned query organically.

After a couple of months, she again submitted the contact form on my website, and she told me that she had written to me before. This time she asked about writing content for a website – the homepage and individual web pages.

By then I had forgotten about our previous exchange, but I looked up her email in my inbox and found her previous message.

This time I sent her a quote for the website and web page content. It included the homepage and the other, normal pages on her website.

She asked me why I had sent a different estimate per page the last time, which was way more than what I had quoted for the current work.

I told her that my previous estimate was for a landing page and right now she was talking about web pages of a website. These two are different.

Copywriting for a landing page, therefore, costs more.

It’s not that one needs to write a lot in the case of a landing page. A web page having 1000 words may cost a lot less than a landing page having 500 words.

In fact, sometimes only 250 words may do the job, but a copywriter may charge as if he or she is writing 5000 words.

Just the fact that only 250 words are needed and not 5000 words tells you how much experience your copywriter has, and then you pay for that experience, and not for the number of words.

A landing page needs to be compelling. It must convince people into performing the action you want them to perform.

For example, if you want people to register for your webinar and if your landing page copy is not able to convince them, they’re not going to register, or the conversion rate of your landing page is going to be quite poor.

This means, the money that you are be spending on your PPC campaign, on your email campaign, or on your social media marketing campaign, it is going waste because the traffic is not converting.

Remember that every person that you send to your landing page, you spend money on that person or visitor.

Hence, for better conversion rate, you need compelling and effective copywriting, which is different from usual content writing for a web page.

The level of expertise needed to write a landing page is completely different from that of writing a normal web page.

This is why, when I send an estimate for a landing page, it is a lot different from the estimate of the usual web page.

But the necessity to convert is lower because you’re not spending money for every visitor, you’re getting to that normal web page.

Most of the traffic that comes to your normal web page originates organically. It either comes from search engines like Google, or from other websites and blogs that may have published your link.

A normal web page gives information about your company. It doesn’t necessarily sell a product or a service.

There is no sense of urgency in a normal web page.

Suppose you have B2B website. Your business partners would prefer to come to your website and get information about the products or services that you are offering.

They just want the information. Right now they don’t want to buy from you so they are not expecting to be hard sold.

If you have sent me all the needed details, I give you an idea of how much it is going to cost and how much time I normally take to turn in one document.

We decide on the scale of the work, the timeline and the pricing.

These days I’m taking in assignments in small chunks to better manage my payments.

In the aftermath of the Covid-19 outbreak, many clients randomly disappeared, and they didn’t even respond to my emails.

I must have lost at least 120 hours of work.

I like to take an advance now.

It is understandable that new clients don’t want to put in that much money not sure whether I’m going to live up to their expectations or not.

So, I take work in small chunks so that I get the money for the work I’m doing and the clients feel reassured that they are not risking a lot.

In the past 15 years (this is 2020) if I’m not forgetting, there must have been just 4-5 instances of a total lack of synergy and a bit of acrimony.

In a couple of occasions, in a bit of enthusiasm and overconfidence, I bit more than I could chew, and I immediately regretted that.

In the latest incident, the client accepted my document.

Then, after two days, she said that she needed some revisions because she thought the document was lacking some important information.

I added the information. She accepted the document. Even applauded.

Then after two days she contacted again and said that I had forgotten to add testimonials.

I said that she hadn’t given me the testimonials.

She said that I was supposed to make them up.

I said how could I make up testimonials?

She sent me some pointers and I made the testimonials.

She received the document without acknowledging.

Then, after a week, she said that the content that I had written was not looking good on the web page when her web designer put it there.

I saw the web page. The web designer had simply copy/pasted the text from my Word Document to some HTML editor.

I use a certain formatting style in my Word Documents, and I don’t even use double line breaks between paragraphs (because I have set enough spacing in the style itself).

Hence when her web designer just copy/pasted the text, it was a big wall of text and nothing else.

I told her that the web designer needed to format the text. There were many <h2> headings that were totally missing.

There was some bulleted points.

There needed to be some spacing between paragraphs.

She said no, the problem was with the writing and not with the web designer.

I was talking to her on the phone. Something in her voice told me that she herself was designing the web page and there was no web designer.

Anyway, one thing led to another and there was a huge argument and I told her that I was not her secretary that I would do everything.

She told me that I shortchanged her, and she regretted the day when she decided to contact me.

I was very sad.

Anyway, this is just an example of the sort of communication gap that can happen.

The other content writers working with me charge according to their comfort level and sometimes they have their own pricing. When I’m collaborating with other content writers I don’t partner with them on the basis of how less they charge per word or per page or per blog post. I’m more concerned with the quality of their work rather than how much they charge (unless they charge something totally ridiculous).

If I share my general experience with you, content writers based in Europe, America and Australia charge more for their website content writing services than content writers based in Asia and Africa. This is often attributed to a lower cost of living in Asia and Africa. Personally I don’t think so, but that is altogether a different topic.

What about charging per word for website content writing?

I generally don’t encourage my writers to charge per word unless the client insists. 90% of the times I have seen that word-based website content writing rates prove to be counter-productive.

If content writers charge per word both the parties are constantly sitting on the edge due to an expanding and contracting pricing. Sometimes, writers tend to write more unnecessarily just because they are charging per word. Sometimes clients truncate their content to reduce their costs at the expense of quality and effectiveness.

When you are paying for content writing it is always better to pay for chunk of words or better, for quality. This is why when I charge $25 per blog post (for example) or $35 per webpage, I commit a range of words: 400-700 words.

After that, it is $5 for every extra 100 words.

Why 400-700 words?

This is the safe range. Google prefers 700-1000 words these days for better search engine rankings but normally, over 400 words is fine. Every webpage is normally 400-700 words and this is why this is the range that I offer to my clients for the rates I currently charge.

Ideally I would like to charge for the quality of website content writing being provided at Credible Content, rather than according to the quantity. I’m gradually moving towards that state of affairs.

Do I change my website content writing rates in the middle of the project? Or does the pricing remain fixed once it has been decided?

It rarely happens. Writing rates may be revised if somehow the client changes the specifications in a big way. Like, initially he or she had said that finding information on a particular topic would be easier, and it proves to be very difficult.

Or, he or she had said that most of the factual information would be provided by him or her but then, he or she expects me to collect the data. It takes time. Time is money.

Sometimes a client sends me wrong specs. I prepare the entire content according to the specs that I received initially and then suddenly, he or she says that wrong specs were sent to me. Under such circumstances, I have no option left but to change my website content writing rates in the middle of the project.

How do I charge hourly rate when writing web content?

Many clients are a bit worried how I charge an hourly rate. What if I add a few extra hours randomly to charge more?

If you have such apprehensions, I can totally understand. After all, we are sitting at different locations. You cannot monitor me all the time. Most probably you don’t even know me. How can you trust me with the hourly rate?

I have no reassurance for that. This is why, initially I suggest all my clients to pay per blog post or per webpage rather than an hourly rate. When a trust level is established and when both my client and I feel that an hourly rate would be better, we proceed with that.

Let’s take an example of a webpage. Normally I take one-two hours to write a typical webpage of 700 words, including a couple of revisions asked by the client.

If I charge a fixed rate, whether I spend 20 minutes on a webpage or two hours, I’m going to charge that fixed rate, for example, $35.

But if I’m using a time tracking app and if I spend 30 minutes on a webpage, instead of $35, you will be paying $17.50. This may not be the case when you look at the rates according to individual blog posts and articles, but when it comes to the overall rate, there may be a big difference.

Having said all this, it is in my self-interest to charge my clients fairly. A lot of my business comes from people who have already worked with me. Getting repeat work is always better than trying to get new work. So, when I’m charging them, I try my best to make my clients happy about my rates.

In fact, I won’t even touch search engine optimization unless I’m sure your content is going to convert. So, here are a few steps I take when writing content for your website:

Unless I totally understand what you offer and what difference your offer can make to people’s lives it won’t be possible for me to write engaging content that converts. So, I spend a considerable amount of time trying to understand your business and how people benefit from it.

Prepare a list of keywords and search terms people may use: The search terms and keywords that people may use in order to find your business might be totally different from what you think people must be using. Again, unless I understand what is optimized content appropriate for your business, I cannot really understand what keywords and search terms people may be using to find your business on search engines. We have the think from the perspective of your customers. Personally, I believe that even the keyword tools available on the Internet to find the right keywords aren’t well-equipped. Remember that it’s your title that people see as a hyperlink in search engine results. People click on those links more where they see the keywords that they have just used as hyperlinks. An optimized title also affects your search engine rankings. Creating a compelling title with the help of your keyword and search term is a very important part of writing optimized content.
  4. Start writing content: When I start writing content for your website, as mentioned above, my first priority is to write engaging content – content with high conversion rate. Even when I work with other content writers, I train them in such a manner that before bothering with what is optimized content in the conventional sense, they simply focus on creating high-quality, well-written content. Your first priority is to get more business and this is what is to be achieved through effective, high quality content.
  5. Incorporate keywords: Now I have gotten enough practice to incorporate keywords even when I’m preparing the first draft but if that is not the case, after I have created the first draft, I incorporate the keywords.   6. Follow an optimized content structure: When you are writing optimized content make sure that your keyword-phrase appears within the first couple of sentences. Then, at least once keyword-phrase should appear within the <h1> and <h2> tags. I also use a few of your main keywords as anchor text while linking to other content on your website or blog. The entire idea is to use an optimized content strategy to give the search engine crawlers and algorithms a fair idea of what your webpage or blog post is talking about.

These are the standard steps I follow when writing optimized content for your website or blog. There might be scores of other things that I keep in mind while trying to figure out what is optimized content according to your business needs, but they are spontaneous. Although, I follow a plan, once I have started writing, I prefer to let things roll on their own as long as I stick to the main topic and make sure the tone and the texture of my writing is engaging and trustworthy.

My intention is to inform people, to motivate them, to get them going. Remember that the sole purpose of every content writing exercise is to generate more business (or whatever you want to generate) and unless that happens, everything is waste. Then keywords become secondary.

But then keywords are needed. So how to use them without compromizing on the quality of the content you are writing? This question arises because you may have to cover every possible keyword combination without creating duplicate content and without writing gibberish.

How do I do it?

For every new topic (keywords and key phrases) I create a separate Evernote note. Using those keywords and key phrases I create a compelling title. The title decides what I’m going to write for the rest of the web page or the blog post. It decides the theme. It decides the flow. It decides the structure and above all, it decides the central message.

After I have created a compelling title using the keywords and the key phrases (normally a key phrase involving 2-3 words) I start preparing the main body. When I’m writing the first draft I don’t worry much about the keywords although if they can be incorporated I don’t refrain from them, but I don’t go overboard.

Once I have created a draft, and start inserting the main headlines so that various chunks of content can be organised or arranged beneath them. These headlines I create using the keywords and key phrases. I try to use at least 3-4 sub-headlines on every article or blog post that I write to create optimized content. Once these are done, I try to incorporate phrases that contain the keywords. Again, I don’t force them. In case it is absolutely necessary to use them, I rewrite the content in such a manner that these keywords and key phrases are incorporated. I do it without losing the flow and the quality of the content.

Search engines like Google take into factor the number of quality incoming links to your website. They use these incoming links as validations. Google’s algorithms assume that if people link to your website, then your website must have something valuable and hence, it deserves to be ranked better than compared to those websites who don’t have many incoming links. To a great extent yes, although personally I feel you shouldn’t encourage linkbaiting just for the sake of SEO. People linking to your website or blog can send you direct traffic – it means even if you don’t enjoy good rankings you can still get quality web traffic from these websites.

Linkbaiting got mainstream when Google started assigning page ranks (PR) to various websites. If many websites and blogs with higher page rank link to your website, it also begins to get a higher page rank. In return, if you link to another website, due to your own higher pagerank, the pagerank of that website will improve too. So this is how linking with each other begins to affect people’s rankings.

Until the Google Panda updates link building used to be a great business (it is still, among the ignorant).
